Have you ever looked at a couple and wondered, “How on earth did he land her?”

Liar. Yes you have!

I know we try not to be vain and focus solely on the exterior of a person, but sometimes the extreme disparity between physical attractiveness is so immense that it is almost impossible not address that question.

Blame it on society or even the way we are wired, but it happens, and we are then faced with the unfair, and yet, kind of fun, task of trying to figure out what brought these two together.

The default option is to assume that he has an amazing personality. Of course, that theory is shredded to pieces after you witness him dig in his ear for a good 15 seconds before checking out his prize and smelling it for verification.

You then start to wonder if he has money and maybe she is gold-digger. Although, it would be hard to think that considering the clothes he is wearing. But hey, Steve Jobs was filthy rich and he always wore black turtlenecks and mom jeans, so what’s to say that this guy isn’t…oh…never mind…she just paid for his lemonade at Chic-fil-a. That’s probably not it.

After considering a few more of the more unlikely options (arranged marriage, she’s blind, the guy developed a “true love” potion and she is now under his spell), you come to a moment of acceptance and give the girl your silent appreciation for taking pity on this Quasimodo and giving their relationship a fighting chance.

While I have certainly been guilty of these thoughts myself, I am more than sure that I have been the subject of these inner inquisitions. I have no problem admitting that I married up. There is no logical reason for my wife to have chosen to spend the rest of her life with someone who looks like he spent a good part of his life in an encampment made to starve potential giants, but she did and I couldn’t be more grateful.

So, next time you get the urge to judge a couple based on their appearance, try to remember that we can’t all be models like you.

Oh, and for any other Uggos out there looking to land their very own “Princess Bride”…I will post the potion recipe soon.
